Hello, everybody,
I have question about this "personal alliances" in the conversation below.
What is the "personal alliances" ? I found sereval definitions for "alliance" here:
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=alliance&r=66 But I do not know which definition is suitable for this "personal alliances", I mean,
in this context, is "personal alliances" a relationship of association of people with
common aims, or is it a relationship created by marriage between the families ?
You can see the full context here: Question 3 through 6. Listen to part of a talk
in a United States history class. The professor is talking about economics in colonial
New England.

Student: Excuse me, Dr. Singer, but did they...did the Native Americans have a
concept of wealth?
Dr.Singer: The Native Americans believed a person's status came more from kinship
and
personal alliances than from stores of wealth. Their definition of "need"
was what they needed to survive. So if they had food, clothing, shelter,
they considered themselves wealthy. ...
