I heard this word in a TED lecture for the first time. And this is the model sentence of my online dictionary. The explanation of this part is "rather than advantages of marriage itself". There is no meaning about color in any of the materials that I have saw. So could you tell me what it means?

It means by itself, or of itself.
It is not some special quality of marriage itself that makes the difference, it is motherhood that causes the observed effect.
