Omar AhmedSometimes when I get an answer from this wonderful site and show it to my instructor, he declines it. He claims that the moderators of all sites depend on informal English and he assures that they are not teachers of English. He also says that we must depend on dictionaries and grammar references and not on non-specialist native speakers. Is that true?
In the main, I'm with your instructor. You have to be wary of everything on the Internet. But this forum is one of the rare exceptions. The regulars in here are to a man (or woman) erudite, responsible, big-hearted folks who can handle colloquial English and formal English with equal ease. Many of them seem to be retired or active ESL teachers. They check each other constantly (don't I know it) and correct each other's mistakes. They present alternative points of view when necessary because there is no Grand Arbiter of English. They answer in a manner calculated to cater to the needs of an ESLer, explaining fully in the simplest possible terms and providing references to sources. You can believe every answer you get in here, and I would like to see some of the answers that your instructor takes exception to.
