Perplexing sentences

1. She.........that her brother was helping her with her homework that afternoon.

a) said to me b) told me

2. The teacher didn't check your homework. You........it checked last week.

a) should have had b) could have

My answer:

1. b 2. a

My friend says that both 'a' & 'b' are OK in both sentences. Is he right?

3. He told me that he was ill that day. He added that he would go the doctor then.

Is the use of 'added' as a reporting verb correct here?
