Perplexing sentences

1. President Sadat died in 1981, before that the Egyptian army......the Suez Canal in 1973.

2. My friend's family live in a very wealthy coastal ......in France.

3. After I ......to the stadium , I realised that the match had started.

4. After...........his car under a 'No Parking' sign, the police towed it away.

My answers

1. I go for 'had crossed' but I think 'crossed' is also OK.

2. I go for 'area' but I think 'district' is not incorrect.

3. I go for 'got' but I think 'had got' is also correct.

4. I go for ' parking'. Is there a dangling modifier in this sentence? The subject of the first sentence is 'he' but the subject of the second sentence is 'the police'.
