Period should be inside quotation marks

The sentence is "You are clever."

Where I. live, the BrE teachers think the period is inside the quotation marks. Are they Correct?

Thanks.

I think you can analyse it both ways. On the basis that the full stop belongs to the quoted sentence, it may go within. An additional convention that this stop can also serve as the stop for the containing sentence is required.

In my opinion it can be. However, styles vary.
