Period from the date of purchase

When one of my friends shops for canned foods, he checks the expiry date like most people do.

Most of the stores in my city sell canned foods of the same type that have different expiry dates.
For example, in one store, some canned tuna expires six months from today, some nine months from today, some one year from today, some one and a half years from today, some two years from today, and so on.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have tried to formulate two questions below.

(1) I ask my friend, "Within what period from the date of purchase do you usually choose canned foods that are safe to eat?"

The answer I expect from him is:

(2) He replies, "I usually choose those that expire at least one year from the date of purchase."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(A) Will my question (1) lead my friend to give his response (2)?

(B) If not, how do I rephrase it?

Thanks for your help.
