Perhaps and Maybe; What's the difference?

Hi everyone;

What is the difference between "Perhaps" and "Maybe"? I never pay attention, but one of students asked me and I got interested if there is any difference.

As far as I know, they are interchangeable. There is also mayhap , to which some people incorrectly, or jokingly, add an s .

Yes, it means 'chance' or 'fortune' --- I've never come across it except in a dictionary.

I thought it might mean something. "Chance" or "fortune", it makes sense - "Per chance"
