Perhaps a Choppy Comma

He signals with his head for them to be released, and then they all fly away, leaving the forlorn couple on the beach together, alone, once again.

How does that comma before "alone" look? Too much? The reason I put it is because without it, it seems too literal and I was worried that it would seem like an oxymoron, since they can't really be alone if they are together, yet they are alone, since all they have is each other.

Thanks.

That sounds OK. What bothers me in both sentences, actually, is 'fly away'—unless they are birds or aeronauts.
