perforce or "by mistake"

I never thought of going back to my country. However, if I went back perforce or "by mistake", I would have joined a progressive political party.

I would appreciate your comments on the sentence above.

Hi Abil, I would probably have written it like this: I never thought of going back to my country. However, if I had gone went back perforce or "by mistake", by force of circumstance, I would have joined a progressive political party. By the way, "by mistake" looks distinctly odd there; it's difficult to imagine how you could have gone back 'by mistake' in this context, unless you'd boarded the wrong plane at the airport.

Perforce means unavoidably, forced by circumstance. It is not the same as doing something by mistake, which means you did not mean to do it.
"If I went back by mistake" - rather implies you meant to go somewhere else or had not meant to return at all.
