Perfect tense

Can someone please explain why this is wrong:
We have been knowing each other for more than 10 years.

I know what it should be, but can't quite figure out how to explain to a friend of mine exactly why it is wrong. Cheers.

It's ok if you mean "know" in the sense of carnal knowledge. Then it would mean the same as "We have been *** each other for more than 10 years".
