A percent is a fractional number between 0 and 1 multiplied by 100 that represents a proportion of a whole. The symbol for percent is %

For example, if there is an election with two candidates, the candidate with more than half (0.50 = 50%) of the votes will win. If a book has 50 pages, and you have read 40 pages, you have read 80% of the whole book.

If your bank pays 2% interest on your savings account, and you have $100, they will pay you $2 each year.

A percentile is a number from 1-99 that expresses a statistical distribution of a value in a population or group. The values could be test scores, weight, height, ages, hair length or practically anything else that can be measured for each member of the group.

For example, take the ages of people in your country. Some will be babies (0-1 years), and some will be very old people (95-100 years old).

If you are 23 years old, there might be 27% of the people who are your age or younger than you, and 73% of the people are older than you. So you are in the 27th percentile of the age distribution of your country.

If your father is 46, there might be 56% of the people who are his age or younger. He is in the 56th percentile.

If your grandfather is 92 years old, there might be very few people his age or older. He might be in the 99th percentile. That means there are only 1% of the people who are older than 92. The ages of the people in the 99th percentile might range from 89-104.
