Percentage of total music sales by method
The chart below illustrates the percentage of total music sold through streams , downloads and CDs purchase from 2010 to 2018.
Overall, there was a decline in the proportion of downloads and CDs purchased, whereas the figure for streams increased significantly over period shown.
The total number of music sold through streams increased significantly from 2010 to only about 5% to 45% in 2018, the number of music sold by downloads from 2010 to 2012 increased slightly from 32% to 40% but then gradually decreased to 20% in 2014 and plummeted in 2016 and 2018. Finally, the number of music sold via CDs purchased reached over 60% in 2010 but fell deeply in 2012 to only 40% and plummeted to 20 % respectively in 2018.
