Percent vs percentage

Hi

I tried to look up the difference between percent and percentagein a few dictionaries, but remained none the wiser. Emotion: zip it!

Could you please help me?

...and do you find this sentence natural and correct?

What percent do you understand his spoken French?

Thanks,

Tom

What percent / percentage of his spoken French do you understand? I find the words problematical too, Tom. ') Looked at another way, use 'percent' where you could use '%'-- I think that is a safe approach.

I find the words problematical too, Tom. I suggest using 'percent' for specific figures ('He ate 50 percent of the cookies.') and 'percentage' for more general or abstract discussions ('From politics to cookery, ratios, proportions and percentages are part of everyday life.')
