Would you say that both of these are equally natural and synonymous?

His essay was peppered with quotations. 
His essay was sprayed with quotations.

I think I have seen a sentence like this somewhere (I am not sure though). Does it not work for you either?

No, that does not sound right to me at all. You may get another answer from another member, though.

This speaker of BrE feels the same as MrM.

"Sprayed" won't work on the other side of the Atlantic either. But "sprinkled" will.
