Peoples or people

Hi,

Can you help me with the people and peoples common question

As permafrost melts, the arctic people lose valuable shoreline.

The peoples of Africa are nice

Which one would it be in these examples and why?

I'd use "people" in the singular in both cases . "Peoples" is quite special. "The peoples of X (continent)" is used when the continent is home to multiple disparate indigenous races, each having it's own culture with longstanding traditions which are still observed.

  • "The peoples of Africa / South America" makes sense because some of these cultures still survive intact.
