people take time to do sth

1. It took me three hours to write this composition.
2. The composition took me three hours.
3. I took three hours to write the composition.
#1 and #2 are correct. According Michael Swan's Practical English Usage, #3 is also correct. However, many English usage manuals published in the People's Republic of China condemn this use. Is #3 really acceptable?

Hi Teo,

My experience is that #3 is widely used in conversation but the others are preferred among "professionals."
