These days, many companies have implemented policies and procedures to reduce the number of senior employees at work. This has raised an argument amongst the general public that these workers should have the freedom to make their own decision on whether to stay in or leave their jobs regardless of their age. I completely agree with this statement and will present a discussion to support this position.
There is evidence to suggest that senior citizens are sometimes locked out of the workforce through age discrimination. One of the reasons that is often given is their productivity may be negatively impacted by age-related health issues. For example, a significant proportion of the elderly suffering from high blood pressure is usually advised to seek time for regular health checks. This may lead to the situation of absenteeism which can potentially cause a major effect on group projects and company finances.
Despite the above argument, it is possible to argue that maintaining an elderly workforce can bring out numerous important benefits for companies and the government. The first potential factor to be considered is that people who stay in the workplace for longer periods can contribute more to their companies due to their knowledge and skills acquired after years of experience and expertise. For instance, they often have exceptional leadership skills and strong communication skills compared to their younger colleagues.
Another benefit is that people who work longer accrue more superannuation savings and, therefore, are less reliant on the government's provision of a pension during retirement. This can be seen as a positive factor that alleviates the heavy burden of welfare on the national budgets.
In conclusion, encouraging the elderly workforce is more likely to create numerous advantages for the economy than drawbacks. I totally agree with the idea that the elderly should not be forced to resign from their jobs because of ageing issues. Furthermore, I suggest that practical policies should be imposed to tackle negative societal attitude and company prejudice that prevent older people from working.
