People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought...

What does the following quotations mean? The parts which I couldn't completely understand are in bold.

1: People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought, which they avoid." Søren Aabye Kierkegaard

2: Aren't people absurd! They never use the freedoms they do have, but demand those they don't have; they have freedom of thought, they demand freedom of speech." Søren Kierkegaard, Diapsalmata, Either/Or (1843).

1) He's saying that people avoid using their brains. He's also saying that people say a lot of stupid things. So, they have the freedom to think about what they say and then not say dumb things, but they don't use that freedom.

I think in this case he is referring to the abuse of "Freedom of speech" by those who would make others follow blindly.

Say a journalist cries freedom of speech to fight a gag order, when he's sensationalizing someone's guilt without any evidence to support the crime and the public declares his guilt without looking at the facts.

More directly, still, how about a member of the go
