Pencil points eyes

hello all,

can you tell me, what is meant by "His Eyes are pencil points." in the following text:

Does Klara imagine that he glances at her? His eyes are pencil points. But perhaps she’s wrong; when she looks again, he’s returned to the baby, blowing raspberries on her soft brown skin."

thank you

It is a metaphor. It is not a stock metaphor. I think the writer tried something that didn't work, and she didn't realize it.

  • I suppose she meant that the baby's eyes took on a severe expression, but if you have to think that hard about a turn of phrase in the middle of reading a story, it's not good, and the image does not mean anything at first.
