Penchant

Must the word "penchant" be used in the format of "penchant for," as in:

"he has a penchant for chocolate / melodrama"?

Can penchant possibly be used without the preposition "for" with the meaning of "tendencies" or "inclinations" or "disposition" as in:

"Stalin's extremist ideological penchant(s)"?

I have never seen it used this way but I want to know if it can be used this way strictly on lexical grounds.

Thank you.

I am sorry, but do you mean yes as in yes, you must use the word penchant in the format of 'penchant for,' or do you mean yes you can use it without "for," as in the example in quotation marks that I gave?

Sorry, I was answering the last question. The word can be used alone.
