Yesterday, I just came across one word or phrase "PEER past" in the sentence "ALAN WILSON PEERED past his Atomics at the skiers whizzing by 20 feet below the chairlift".
Could anyone kindly help me on interpreting the sentence above? how to translate the "peer past" and "Atomics" in this particular circumstance to make it sense.
Thanks in advance.

Peer = look I'm not sure what Atomics means, possibly a brand name for glasses or binoculars?

Thanks for all of your advice which gave me a much more clear mind of what the Atomics could be in this sentence and the meaning of the whole sentence seemed a piece of cake to me.
