Peel the potato/cucumber thick

Hi

Are these natural expressions?

He doesn't know how to peel potatoes thin.

Or

Don't peel the cucumber so thick.

[The intended meaning is: while removing the skin, he also wastes a lot of potato which goes away with the skin.]

Thanks,

Tom

The best option would be to describe as you did at the bottom of your post: "He wastes a lot of the potato when he peels it."

It may work if you say: "He cuts too deeply when he peels the potato." "Make shallower cuts when peeling."
