Peasant?

Hi,

Is the word "peasant" a derogatory term and so should be avoided?
Can you give me some more neutral synonyms for 'farmer'?

Thank you.

The word 'peasant' is not really part of modern English. Now it is indeed rather derogatory. If you check a thesaurus, you'll find many synonyms for farmer , but almost all of them are not in use..

It could be derogatory, depending on the time period to which you refer. If it is the current time, I'd avoid it, unless you are talking about some place in the world where people are actual "peasants." We don't think of peasants as farmers so much as poor people under the control of some higher "class." I looked "peasant" up at dictionary.com, which I recommend you use for such questio
