Education terminology can vary quite a lot across English-speaking countries. I'm not sure that the term "sports class" is used in UK schools (it certainly wasn't when I was at school), though it is easily understandable as meaning a class where sport is taught. In the UK, "PE" is the traditional name for the school subject.

I doubt it. PE is more general, and "sports class" could only be used as a general term for classes like "swimming", "baseball", or "tennis". If you know specifically which sport the class is about, you use the specific name.
