pay vs pay for - a sentence with a prepositional phrase?

Hi,

Which one is better/more correct?

The company hasn't transferred my salary yet onto my bank account. That made me *** mate, I've got bills to pay/pay for!

Sorry. I was quoting my British buddy who I work with... I didn't pay much attention to the "bad word" but I did pay attention to the fact that he said I have bills to pay which made me wonder...

MM, can you briefly explain to me how come we don't need to say pay for when we talk about bills ?

Notice my example above. You are not paying for a bill; you are paying for the item you bought. You are paying the bill for the item you bought.
