pay tribute

UN Secretary General: I was so committed that when my father passed away, I didn't fly home immediately.Only after a meeting, did I go back to my hometown to pay tribute to my father.

Is there another way of saying "pay tribute"?
Thanks.

New2grammar Is there another way of saying "pay tribute"? "pay my respects" is the most common expression. I don't think I've ever heard "pay tribute" used in this context.

I have heard pay tribute numerous times but don't recall the exact context. Could you provide a context in which pay tribute fits?
