Patients or the patients

Dear Native Speakers and Teachers,
In this sentence:
With this disease, patients usually manifest the following symptoms.

Is it also okay if I write "the patients"? Without the article it is better (no specific patients), but I've been taught that you can use the definite article if it's a group that you get from the logical context. So "the patients" - those patients that suffer from that disease.

Again, I know "patients" is better, but would "the" be correct as well, if less preferable?

Thank you.

Without the article it is better (no specific patients), That is not really true; they are the patients with that disease.
