Past/past perfect/ past perfect continuous?

He got the sack after he wrote the article.
He got the sack after he had written the article.
He got the sack after having written the article.

Does it matter which tense is used? They all sound right to me (meaning doesn't seem all that different with the word "after" in it). Is the difference only in emphasising?

In this series of examples, no. You have listed them more or less in order of register, moving from lower register (more like ordinary conversation) to higher register (more literary). There is no real difference in meaning (or emphasis).
