Pastor/pasta in BrE (pronunciation)

1. pastor /'p??.st?r//'pæs./

2. pasta /'pæs.t?//'p??.st?/



Q1) Isn't the pronunciation #1 and #2 very similar in BrE so people are likely to misunderstand specially when there is no context?



Q2) I think the phonetic sign for 'pasta' in UK English is really interesting because I don't think I've seen any word in BrE pronounced 'ae' when AmE pronounces 'a'. What do you think?
