Past/after retirement age

Do both "Most of his colleagues opted to work past/after retirement age" sound okay to you?

Yes. However, to me, 'past' suggests the work is ongoing through the time of retirement and beyond while 'after' may suggest starting a position post-retirement age. It's not a certainty, it just seems to indicate those subtleties to me.
