Past vs present

Hi, please help me.

A: I've been invited to Susan's birthday party.
B: Speaking of which, did you know she is getting married in March?

Is it possible to replace "did" with "do"? If it is OK, Is there any difference between the sentences?

You would use "did". And yes, there is a difference. If you use "do", that would mean you are asking if that person knows that Susan is getting married.

  • You would use "did".
  • And yes, there is a difference.
  • If you use "do", that would mean you are asking if that person knows that Susan is getting married.
  • But the person already knows that Susan is getting married (becuase you just told that them), so the question becomes rhetorical.
  • However, when you use "did", you are asking whether or not that person knew that Susan was getting married before you told them (that she was getting married).
