Past tenses with until

Hi, I would like to ask you about the following sentence.

When I say Yesterday I painted the room until 8.00, does this mean that I finished painting and the room is painted now?

And how about the sentence I enjoyed/was enjoying the party until he came. Are both the past simple and continuous correct?

Top answer

-- The painting could be completed, or it could not be completed. The sentence does not include that information. And how about the sentence I enjoyed/was enjoying the party until he came.

  • -- The painting could be completed, or it could not be completed.
  • The sentence does not include that information.
  • And how about the sentence I enjoyed/was enjoying the party until he came.
  • -- Yes, both are possible.
  • The continuous is the better choice, since it indicates a durative activity interrupted by a point event.
