Past tenses

Hi Everyone,

How would you explain the following sentence to a student:

I had been travelling in France then I had travelled to Spain where I have been travelling for three years and then I travelled to Equador where I have now settled.

I know this sentence is extremely clumsy. How would you tell a student that this doesn't work.

Thanks,

CC Emotion: smile
