Past tenses

When I was in high school, my teacher told the whole class about the time he had given his students an enormous amount of homework, and then they all just left the classroom. (Couldn't think of a better sentence, bear with me)

Is the bolded verb supposed to be in the past perfect or is it enough that I used "had given" to indicate I was talking about some event that had happened a long time before he talked to them?

Top answer

'had given' is enough. The event does not have to be a long time ago. It just has to be before some later event.

  • 'had given' is enough.
  • The event does not have to be a long time ago.
  • It just has to be before some later event.
  • I hope you realize that in cases where the sequence of events is clear, as it is here, we commonly use Simple Past instead of Past Perfect
