Past tenses

Hello,

I've got a problem with this sentence. Can you help me decide which tenses should be applied in it?

"Before I finally ___ (apply) for this job, they ___ (have) to encourage me for hours."

I would use past simple in both gaps, but I am not sure.

Thank you
