Hello could you please tell me whether all of the following sentences are correct?

It had been snowing heavily for hours and when I went to the door I could not open it.

It was snowing for hours and when I went to the door I could not open it.

'snowing' as a durative verb can be used in the progressive, while perfect past indicates that the weather conditions had been like that (long) before the protagonist decided to approach the door and open it. Moreover, the sequence of tenses is as it should be. I would choose sentence one as part of a narrative where cohesion is of importance.
