Past tense with "until"

I found following sentence while I was reading an article. My question is why they have used until with past tense. If I had written that, I would have used past perfect tense instead.


The sentence that I've found from the article:

I studied Spanish until I was 14.


Please someone tell me what is the difference between above sentence and the following one, which I wrote.


The sentence written by my self:

I had studied Spanish until I was 14.


My main point is here we are talking about some action that had been continuing until they was 14. In order to express such ideas, it is required to use perfect tenses.
