Past tense - Present tense help

1) Last night, they knew how to keep our mind engaged so that our mind didn't / doesn't wander off
2) During the war, they know / knew how to defend themselves

It would be great if someone can refer me to a link where I can learn more about the tenses, especially when they are used in situations. Thank you!
