Past tense; plural noun - 'was' or 'were'?

Hello,

I read this sentence today, and I wondered which of 'was' or 'were' was correct:

'All I heard was the dogs barking.'

'All I heard were the dogs barking.'

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Richard
