Past tense or present tense

Is this OK: I got in a car accident a week ago and I tell my friend, "I was in a hurry to the hospital with my pregnant wife in the backseat."

And he says, "Was/is that why u rammed into the car in front of you?"

I say, "that's/that was exactly why I wasn't paying attention to the road!"

Are both verb tenses okay in my examples?
