Past tense or Perfect past tense

Hi everybody.

I have a paragraph like below:

Mr XXX ..... for my company for three year, from the June of 20 -- until he left to continue his university studies two years ago. Mr XXX was a great person, always fullfilled his responsibilities in a careful manner.

A. worked
B. had worked

Author's answer is A but I think B is also true. Because Mr XXX was no longer work at the company before he continued his study.

Could you explain more if I wrong? thanks for reading.

  • correct.
  • B is also understandable, but there is no reason to use the past perfect here because all the events are mentioned in the order in which they occurred.
