Past tense of succumb

would it be "he succumbed to a bad case of measles"

or

"he had succumbed to a bad case of measles"?

Hi, Both are correct grammar. But only use the Past Perfect in a context where you want to show that something happened before some later point in time. eg I tried to phone Fred last Monday, but he had succumbed to a bad case of measles.
