Past tense of loathe, bathe, clothe

Hi

I would like to confirm the pronunciation of the past tense of the following words. (The first form of the verb is no problem at all: loathe, bathe, clothe, smooth)

Loathed

Bathed

Clothed

I've seen many Indians and Pakistanis (myself included) stumble on the pronunciation of these words and others like these. For example: smoothed, buck-toothed, mouthed, bequeathed, etc.

Would your native ears cringe if "loathed" was pronounced like "load" and "bathed" was pronounced like "bade"?

Thanks,

Tom

It's a bit of exercise to pronounce them - athletic, so to speak. If you're comfortable with the bare form, you should be okay. " Yes, "load" and "bade" are definitely cringeworthy.

You mustn't give up any of the "th" while adding the "d."
And you mustn't add a second syllable "Ed."
But it definitely takes longer to say it with the "d."

If you have trouble, try substituting a "t" for the "d."

I'm afraid so. You can't leave out the "th" sound without sounding strange.
