Past Tense homework

I am relearning grammar so I know how to use it correctly. I have homework and need to pick which past tense verb works with the following: I've answered most of the 6, but these 2 that are left are confusing to me. I feel that each past tense would work with them, but am not sure. Here are the two that are left.
1. It's used to talk about a completed action in a time before now, you always say when something happened.
2. It refers to a time earlier than before now.
To me I would think all the past tenses would work with those, but I am not quite sure. Any help is greatly appreciated.
By the way this is not graded, so no one is going to help me cheat Emotion: wink
