Past tense and 'last' or 'previous'

When writing in the past tense, consider two sentences:

He wanted a break because the last three months had been hectic.

or

He wanted a break because the previous three months had been hectic.

Which one is correct? Must we avoid last and stick to previous when writing in past tense?

Thanks,
John

Unless you are very close in time to when "he" said he needed a break, so that the "last three months" are still the most recent three months, I would suggest you use "previous."
