Past tense.

Hello teachers,

"What surprised me was he could not do well."

"What surprised me is he could not do well."

What is the difference between the two sentences and when to use is and was?

When using past tense like surprised I normally use was but I hear some using is, please clarify.

Thank you.

tostyle un What surprised me is/was he could not do well. The sentence itself is not completely idiomatic. I'd use a different example sentence: What surprised me is/was that he failed.

  • tostyle un but I hear some using is, please clarify.
  • It doesn't really matter in most cases.
