Past tense?

I've never watched the anime Astro Boy. But I know it's the first animation in Japan, and many Japanese children were once excited about it.

"But I know it's the first animation in Japan"

Would this need to be changed to past tense?
It's still the first anime in Japan, so would present tense be correct? .

Thanks!
