past tense

Hi teachers,

Excerpts:
There's been quite a bit of research into the suicide notes and journals left by people who kill* themselves, but the same level of interest hasn’t extended yet to the notes and journals of people who *tried to kill themselves and lived.

Why the 'kill' isn't in past tense, while 'tried' is in past tense?

Thanks

Hi Mister Micawber,

I'm sorry could I ask which one is an oversight, 'kill' or 'tried'?

Thanks

I'd change both, actually, to 'have killed' and 'have tried'.
