Past tense

I don`t know how to fill it! Please help me.

For 6 years I ....(try) to learn some foreign language but I failed.

Top answer

For usually goes with The Present Perfect Tense, but not always. I think it's For 6 years, I have tried to learn some foreign languages but I failed if the action Learning some foreign languages is still happening. If this action stopped in the past, it would be For (last) 6 years, I tried to learn some foreign languages but I failed .

Hi Anon;
You are doing very well in English!

For 6 years I have tried to learn some foreign languages but I failed. (This implies that you are discouraged and unhappy, but you did not quit, even though so far you are not successful. I have tried and tried, and am still trying! We have a saying: If at first you don't succeed - try, try again.)

For 6 year
